Getting to the Terracotta Army from Xi'an
Tour, public bus or private car — the practical ways to reach the site.
A day trip from Xi'an
The Terracotta Army sits about an hour outside central Xi'an, so a visit is a half- or full-day trip from the city. Xi'an itself, with its famous city walls and Muslim Quarter, is where most visitors base themselves, heading out to the warriors for the day. Factoring in the travel time each way helps you plan a visit that isn't rushed, especially given how much there is to take in on site.
Organised tours
The simplest option is a guided day tour, which handles the round-trip transfer and provides the historical context that the site itself doesn't spell out. Tours range from group coaches to private options, and many combine the warriors with other Xi'an highlights. For visitors who want the story as well as the transport sorted, a tour is the most popular and least stressful way to go.
Public transport
Independent travellers can reach the site by public bus from Xi'an relatively cheaply, which suits the budget-minded and confident. It takes more planning, and you'll be navigating the large site and its history without a guide, so it pairs well with a good audio guide or thorough preparation. For many, though, the savings make the extra effort worthwhile.
Private car or taxi
Hiring a private car or driver gives you flexibility over timing and a comfortable door-to-door trip without the effort of public transport. You can set your own pace, arrive early to beat the crowds, and combine the visit with other sights on your schedule. It's a comfortable middle ground between a fixed group tour and going fully independent.
Arrive early whichever way you go
However you travel, aiming to arrive early pays off. The Terracotta Army is one of China's most visited sites, and Pit 1 in particular gets very crowded as the day goes on. Getting there near opening lets you experience the main pit's scale in relative calm and gives you unhurried time across all three pits and the bronze chariots before the peak crush.
